How to Start Playing Footbag: A Realistic First-Week Plan
Skip the YouTube highlight reels. Here is what actually works in your first seven days with a footbag.
How to Start Playing Footbag
Most people pick up a footbag, drop it 30 times in a row, and quit. That happens because the standard advice ("just kick it!") skips the boring part that actually builds the skill. Here is a realistic week-one plan.
Day 1–2: The Drop Drill
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Drop the footbag from waist height onto your laces — don't kick, just catch it on your foot. Goal: 5 clean catches in a row.
This sounds trivial. It is not. It teaches your foot the angle it needs to receive a footbag, which is the foundation of every stall, kick, and trick you'll ever learn.
Day 3–4: The Single Kick
Drop the bag, let it bounce off your foot once, and catch it with your hands. Don't try to kick it twice yet. Goal: 10 in a row, both feet.
The single kick teaches you the right contact point (the flat of your laces or arch, never the toe) and the right amount of force (almost none).
Day 5: The Two-Kick
Kick it once with your right foot, once with your left, then catch. Goal: 5 in a row.
This is where most beginners' progress gets stuck for a few sessions. Stick with it. Once you can do two kicks reliably, three kicks comes within a week.
Day 6–7: The Circle
Find one other person. Stand 3 meters apart and pass the bag back and forth, one kick each. This is "kicking it" in the original 1972 sense — it's also the entire premise of recreational footbag for the last 50 years.
Common Mistakes
- Kicking too hard. A footbag only needs to go a foot or two in the air.
- Using the toe. Use the laces, the arch, or the outside of the foot.
- Wearing the wrong shoes. Flat skate shoes (Vans, Adidas Sambas) are perfect. Running shoes are awful — the curved sole sends the bag everywhere.
- Using a bouncy bag. A 2-panel knit hacky sack is harder to learn on than a 32-panel freestyle bag.
After Week One
When you can string together five clean kicks, look up two moves: the clipper (inside kick behind the standing leg) and the toe stall (catch the bag on top of your shoe and hold it). Those two unlock 80% of the freestyle vocabulary.
