Footbag Legends: The 6 Players Who Defined the Sport
From the inventors to the current world champions, these are the people who built modern footbag.
Footbag Legends: The 6 Players Who Defined the Sport
Footbag is small enough that you can name the most influential players in its history on one hand. Here are the six who built it.
1. John Stalberger and Mike Marshall (USA)
The inventors. Marshall handmade the original beanbag in 1972; Stalberger turned it into a product and a sport. Marshall died in 1975 at 28, and Stalberger spent the next decade developing the game in his memory before selling the Hacky Sack trademark to Wham-O in 1983.
2. Kenny Shults (USA)
The first true freestyle innovator. In the late 80s and early 90s, Shults invented or popularized many of the moves that are still in the freestyle vocabulary, including the clipper family. He won multiple World Championship titles and authored the foundational instructional video World Footbag.
3. Peter Irish (USA)
Multi-time world net champion in the 90s. Irish defined the modern net game — fast attacks, precise serves, and the high-low kicking strategy that dominates doubles play today.
4. Vasek Klouda (Czech Republic)
The most decorated freestyler of the 2000s. Klouda's combos pushed the sport from "tricks strung together" to flowing routines judged like a gymnastics floor exercise. He's one of the reasons the Czech Republic has been the world's strongest freestyle nation for 20+ years.
5. Honza Weber (Czech Republic)
A two-time freestyle World Champion (2014, 2017) and the most-watched footbag player on social media. Weber's tutorials on YouTube and TikTok have introduced more people to freestyle footbag than any single source since Wham-O's heyday.
6. Evan Gatesman (USA)
Multi-time U.S. champion and a key organizer behind the modern American footbag scene. Gatesman's "shred sessions" — informal high-skill jams documented online — are one of the main reasons the U.S. competitive community survived the 2010s lull.
Honorable Mentions
- Anssi Sundberg (Finland) — 5-time net world champion.
- Damian Gielnik (Poland) — Influential freestyler and prolific trick inventor.
- Tuomas Kärki (Finland) — Current top-tier freestyler and judge.
The list is short, the community is tight, and almost every name above is still active in the sport — coaching, judging, or competing. That's footbag in a nutshell.
